7 Life Lessons I’ve Learnt

No matter how old you are and how successful you get, there are mistakes you make along the way. These mistakes help you become the person you are today and shape your personality. Since there’s no guidebook that tells you how to live your life, nor do you get the option to flip to the last page and see where life will take you; all you can really do is learn from whatever curve-ball life throws your way.

I’m going to be 25 years old soon (cue anxiety attack) and it’d be quite absurd to say that I’m wise beyond my years. Actually if I did say the last part my mother would die laughing. Needless to say I’ve made my fair share of mistakes and learnt from trial and error. By mistakes I don’t mean getting lost while using Google maps or putting conditioner on your face because you’re too sleepy. It’s the hardcore mistakes you make every single day that make you grow as a person. So here’s a short list of lessons that I’ve learnt in my 24 years of life.

Love Your Life – You Only Get One!

Stop doing the things you hate just because you have to. Stop being friends with people who don’t make you happy. You don’t want to be a 50 years old and have hundreds of regrets! Life’s way too short, so make sure you enjoy each and every moment.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Make Lemon Cheesecake!

Things may suck and it may seem like you’re at your wit’s end. But sometimes, all you need is some nice dessert that’ll make you forget about your woes. So the next time you feel like you’re at breaking point, grab a slice of cake and a friend who’ll listen to your rants.

Stay Curious, Stay Young!

I’m almost 25 years old and the only thing keeping me back from a quarter midlife crisis is the insane amount of curiosity I have for the things around me. Okay look, you may be 20-something but rather than thinking you’ve gotten the handle of things, look at the world through the eyes of a child. Be delighted with new discoveries and don’t take the things around you for granted. Trust me, you’ll have a new profound experience each day.

Stop Trying to Control Everything. You Can’t!

Ever heard of the saying “Man plans and God laughs”? No matter how well you plan, there’s always a likelihood that something might go differently. When we have expectations from a situation or day, we usually end up disappointed. We’ve imagined how things will be and when they don’t work out we’re hurt, angry and disappointed. Take a step back, let go of the expectations and the need to control everything. Allow things to just happen and you might just be pleasantly surprised.

Get Rid of Toxic Relationships!

We’ve all had that one friend who makes you feel like shit about yourself. Whether it’s jibes about your body or how dumb you may be, it’s one mean thing after the other. The only reason you’re friends with them is because they’re a nice person at heart (maybe). But anyone who makes you feel bad, inferior and less than your amazing self doesn’t deserve to be in your life. Don’t let yourself be a doormat and never let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. Toxic people only bring you down and it’s about time you did some detox!

It’s Never Too Late to Apologize!

Whether it’s a day, a week, a month, a DECADE; it’s never too late to say you’re sorry. Arguments might end but your hurtful words stay with the person for a lifetime. Don’t leave things be. It doesn’t matter how much time has passed, admit to your mistakes and apologize.

Let It Go, Let It Goooo!

Seriously, just let it go already. The office politics, the fights with your friends, the petty arguments and self-hate. LET IT GO. Stop holding on to things that are bringing you down and the people who treated you badly. They don’t deserve your time and energy.  Move on towards a brighter and lighter future.

This list could’ve had 10 life lessons, or maybe 25. Or maybe even 50 lessons! But I’m still learning every single day of my life. And there’s a lot more mistakes I’ll make and a lot more chances to fix them. (Also, I’m lazy)

What are some things that you’ve learnt?

Check. Check. Check. Check. Check. I would hope by 61, I’ve learned something. Now, I choose where to place my loyalties, my love, my trust, and my Energy. Letting go means FREEDOM, and I’m all about that!
